Day 1- Manchester, NH to Leominster, MA

It was a great, albeit gray Day 1 of the ride. The weather was a concern, and it seemed no two weather apps agreed about the forecast last night.  We woke up to gray skies, temps in the 60s but no rain, and that was pretty much the weather for the rest of the day, except for some misting.

We started the day as we always love to do - at a local diner. We found the Red Arrow in Manchester, a classic rail-car diner. Breakfast was great, and of course, as in any NH diner, there were photographs of every politician who ever campaigned in NH. Great photo of President Obama (and Bill, Hillary, Romney, Edwards, you name it), and apparently Trump's rump sat in one of the diner booths.

Once again, the political signs were incredibly entertaining. Loved these dueling giant Bernie and Trump campaign signs (zero Hillary signs though). They should build a wall :)

I wonder if the moose trails have "bicyclist crossing" signs.

We crossed into Massachusetts at about Mile 54. Disappointed there was no "entering Massachusetts" sign, or "welcome back Ken" signs, but I could tell we were back when I saw the "Thickly Settled" signs that you only find in the Bay state. Did find this "Greetings from Massachusetts" sign in our hotel room.

Proudly wore my Red Sox jersey today and happy to see this Red Sox championship banner hanging in a pizza place we stopped at for lunch. Unfortunately they also served bread with butter in between the slices, but in this case the butter was still in their packets. Nobody touched the bread.

65 miles today, 3621 feet of climbing, on some lovely roads for cycling in New Hampshire and Mass. A relatively easy Anchor House day and with the cool weather - really excellent conditions. Tomorrow should be a beautiful ride to Northampton. Looking forward to being back in Noho.

  1. How could they not have a welcome Ken sign? And what's the story behind "thickly settled"?

  2. People in MA have notoriously large abdomens (generally from eating bread along with their pizza).
